Professor Ajit Lalvani, the Chair of Infectious Diseases and Director of the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit in Respiratory Infections at Imperial College London, has received a reappointment as a trustee of the Science Museum Group in the UK by the Secretary of State. This Group is dedicated to the exploration of science, medicine, technology, industry, and media throughout history and in the modern era.
In his role as a trustee of the Science Museum Group, Lalvani actively encourages the public’s engagement with science and the pursuit of scientific discoveries. He is committed to addressing health disparities by focusing on the social determinants of health.
Furthermore, Lalvani advocates for innovative, community-based approaches in this endeavor, drawing inspiration from initiatives like those established by The Bromley by Bow Centre in Tower Hamlets, where he also serves as the Chair of the Board of Trustees.
Renowned for his work in developing and implementing groundbreaking scientific advancements to protect the nation’s health from severe respiratory infections such as flu, tuberculosis (TB), and COVID-19, Lalvani is dedicated to translating his research findings into practical and innovative solutions to improve patient care and public health.
His contributions include the creation of new technologies and policies that have substantially reduced the burden of TB in England. With an impressive track record, he has secured £40 million in research funding and authored 200 research papers.
Lalvani is unwavering in his commitment to addressing health inequalities by targeting the social determinants of health and empowering individuals to enhance their well-being and resilience, including through the integration of the arts. He also serves on the Board of the English National Opera (ENO) and is a member of the Scientific Advisory Council of the College of Medicine.
