The Association of Indians in America, New York Chapter (AIA-NY), hosted its 37th Annual Diwali Festival with vibrant celebrations aboard a Skyline Princess cruise on October 6, 2024. The event attracted over 400 guests from the community, who were dressed in traditional Indian attire, and sailed from World Fair Marina in Flushing, NY. The stunning fall weather added to the festivities, creating a warm and joyous atmosphere.
AIA-NY President, Dr. Jagdish Gupta, delivered the welcome address, noting the breathtaking views of Manhattan’s skyline as guests cruised along the East River. Passengers marveled at landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty and iconic bridges connecting Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn. The cruise later anchored near Liberty State Park, where attendees enjoyed the highlight of the evening: AIA-NY’s spectacular fireworks display, accompanied by traditional Indian music. Spectators from the New Jersey shoreline were equally mesmerized by the display.
Founded in 1967, AIA-NY aims to preserve India’s cultural heritage in America. During the event, Dr. Gupta reflected on AIA’s accomplishments, such as New York City’s recognition of Diwali as a holiday and the 2013 release of the Diwali ‘Forever Stamp’ by the USPS. He also acknowledged last year’s addition of Diwali to the NYC public school holiday calendar, thanking Mayor Eric Adams and Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar for their support.
The evening featured a cocktail hour with Indian and American drinks, music by Sobars Macwan, and performances by the Sunny Gill Music Group. Honoree Dr. Manish Vira was recognized for his contributions to urologic oncology, while guests danced to Garba and Dandiya. The evening was a grand celebration of Diwali, supported by sponsors like CheapOair, New York Life, and Northwell Health, and concluded with wishes for prosperity and joy for the community.
