India is exploring the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in agriculture, with projections suggesting that smart AI adoption could contribute approximately US$ 7.71 billion to the economy. At the AI4 Agri 2026 conference held in Mumbai, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh, highlighted that AI-driven solutions can increase farm productivity, lower operational costs, and mitigate risks for farmers.
The minister emphasized that nearly 600 million people in the Global South depend on agriculture and face challenges such as climate change, environmental degradation, and health risks. AI applications, including real-time weather updates, disaster preparedness, crop forecasting, and early warning systems, can equip farmers with actionable information, enabling better decision-making and resource management.
The two-day AI4 Agri conference brought together policymakers, scientists, and industry leaders to collaborate on the future of AI-enabled farming. Minister Singh stressed the importance of innovation and technology adoption in ensuring food security and sustainable development. He urged stakeholders to work collectively to position India as a global leader in AI-based agricultural solutions.
During the event, multiple discussions and memorandum of understanding (MoU) signings were conducted to accelerate the adoption of digital farming practices. Leveraging AI and advanced analytics, India aims to optimize resource allocation, enhance productivity, and foster climate-resilient agricultural practices. These initiatives are expected to strengthen the integration of science and technology in rural development and the farming sector.
By promoting AI-driven agriculture, India is preparing to address contemporary challenges in the sector while improving efficiency and sustainability. The government’s push toward digital farming reflects a broader commitment to modernizing agriculture, supporting farmers, and building a resilient food system capable of meeting future demands.
