The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2025 lit up with glitz and celebration as it recognized outstanding achievements in Indian cinema. The evening’s biggest highlight was Abhishek Bachchan winning Best Actor (Male) for his impactful role in I Want to Talk, a performance that drew admiration from audiences and critics alike.
Abhishek’s win was celebrated most warmly at home, with his father, Amitabh Bachchan, expressing immense pride. Taking to social media, the veteran actor wrote: “The happiest father on earth… Best Actor Abhishek… so, so, so proud. Love!!” In another heartfelt post, he revealed that the honour carried deeper meaning, describing it as “Daadi ka aashirwaad,” a blessing from Abhishek’s grandmother.
The proud father also clarified for curious fans that the recognition was indeed for I Want to Talk. His joy reflected not just as a film industry icon, but as a parent cherishing his son’s milestone.
Abhishek, in his acceptance speech, recalled his journey with gratitude: “Life has come full circle. I first came to IFFM in 2022 when I received the Excellence in Cinema Award for my body of work. To now be honored with Best Actor on this stage feels deeply emotional. Three years ago, at this very festival, Shoojit Da offered me this role. He believed in me, and this character became a tribute to my father and my daughter—because it speaks of caring and raising a parent.”
The evening also honoured industry stalwarts and pathbreaking filmmakers. Aamir Khan was presented with the Excellence in Cinema Award, recognizing his decades of contribution, influence, and lasting impact on Indian cinema worldwide.
Meanwhile, filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan emerged as another standout winner, with his powerful drama Homebound securing both Best Film and Best Director. His double victory reflected the growing appreciation for storytelling that combines social depth with cinematic brilliance.
With star power, emotional tributes, and recognition of cinematic excellence, IFFM 2025 reinforced Melbourne’s position as a global stage for celebrating Indian cinema and its ever-expanding influence.
