External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held an in-depth meeting with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York, where the two leaders discussed the shifting global landscape and the future of multilateral cooperation. The conversation took place at the UN headquarters on Thursday, during what was a brief but purposeful stopover by the Indian minister.
After the meeting, Jaishankar shared on X that he valued Guterres’ candid assessment of the evolving international order and its effects on global governance. He also noted that he appreciated the Secretary-General’s insights on numerous conflict zones that continue to shape diplomatic priorities worldwide. Calling their interaction “good,” the minister thanked Guterres for his steady support toward India’s growth, development agenda, and expanding global role. Jaishankar added that he looked forward to hosting him in India soon.
The meeting came shortly after Jaishankar completed an active diplomatic visit to Canada, where he attended the G7 foreign ministers’ gathering as a partner nation. Canada, which currently presides over the G7, extended the invitation to India in recognition of its growing influence in world affairs. On the sidelines of the Niagara meeting, the EAM met several ministers in fast-paced bilateral discussions.
During his Canadian leg, Jaishankar also called on Foreign Minister Anita Anand, with both sides expressing satisfaction over progress under the “New Roadmap 2025,” the plan guiding India-Canada ties. His two-day engagement saw extensive conversations with global counterparts across regions. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed bilateral cooperation with a focus on strengthening supply chains and reviewing security concerns across Ukraine, West Asia, and the Indo-Pacific.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha shared that he briefed Jaishankar on Kyiv’s perspective regarding the path to peace, updates from the frontline, and the recent Russian strikes that threatened critical power infrastructure supporting nuclear facilities. The Indian minister also exchanged views with EU Foreign Affairs chief Kaja Kallas, as well as foreign ministers from France and Germany on strategic partnerships.
Leaders from the UK, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Mexico, and South Africa were also among those who met the EAM, underscoring India’s active diplomatic moment as it navigates a fast-changing geopolitical environment. The UN, through Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq, earlier expressed condolences for the November 10 car bomb incident near Delhi’s Red Fort and called for a thorough investigation.
