India marked a significant milestone in advancing marine collaboration across the Bay of Bengal by hosting the first biennial BIMSTEC-India Marine Research Network (BIMReN) Conference in Kochi. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that the event, held from November 4 to 6, 2025, was aimed at deepening regional cooperation in the field of ocean research and sustainable development.
The three-day conference served as a platform to strengthen partnerships among BIMSTEC countries, fostering innovation in marine science and promoting the sustainable growth of the Blue Economy. Experts and researchers from across the region discussed strategies for tackling shared marine challenges, maintaining ecosystem balance, and encouraging responsible use of ocean resources.
Launched in 2024 by the MEA, BIMReN was designed to facilitate cross-institutional collaborations through initiatives like twinning research grants and split-site PhD fellowships. These programs connect India’s top marine research institutes with counterparts in other BIMSTEC member nations, helping build a stronger foundation for scientific exchange and cooperative research.
Officials emphasized that this conference symbolized India’s commitment to nurturing a science-driven, sustainable approach to maritime policy. By encouraging young researchers and creating effective policy frameworks, the initiative seeks to ensure that the Bay of Bengal becomes a hub for innovation, marine resource management, and regional solidarity.
The gathering not only spotlighted India’s leadership in marine research but also reinforced its vision of a shared and prosperous maritime future for all BIMSTEC countries. Through BIMReN, the region is expected to witness enhanced collaboration, stronger scientific ties, and coordinated actions toward achieving the sustainable use of ocean resources in the years ahead.
