Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met with Maros Sefcovic, the European Union’s Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, in Brussels to discuss the ongoing India–EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations. The discussions come at a decisive stage as both sides aim to finalize a comprehensive and mutually beneficial trade pact soon.
Sharing updates on X, Goyal mentioned that the talks centered on boosting momentum for the FTA, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to reaching a swift and balanced agreement that strengthens economic ties between India and the EU.
The minister began his Brussels visit by meeting Germany’s Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, Johann Wadephul, where discussions covered a wide range of shared interests and emphasized the deepening India–Germany strategic partnership. Both sides also expressed mutual support for the early conclusion of the India–EU trade deal.
According to India’s Commerce Ministry, Goyal’s visit aims to provide strategic direction and political momentum to the negotiations following the 14th round of talks held earlier this month. The discussions are focusing on critical areas such as market access, non-tariff barriers, and regulatory cooperation. The visit will also review progress made and outline next steps for convergence.
The ministry further highlighted that India views this engagement as part of its long-term commitment to enhancing cooperation with the EU—one of its largest trading partners. Strengthening this relationship is seen as vital for building resilient supply chains, promoting sustainable economic growth, and supporting a transparent, rules-based global trading system.
This diplomatic effort follows the recent meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, where both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to deepening strategic and economic ties between India and the European Union.
