US President Donald Trump marked Diwali celebrations at the White House on Tuesday, extending warm greetings to the people of India and the Indian-American community. During the event, he lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him both a “great person” and a “great friend,” while emphasizing the strong ties between India and the United States in trade and regional security.
Trump recounted his recent conversation with PM Modi, noting that their discussion touched on trade and maintaining peace in South Asia. “I just spoke to your Prime Minister today. Had a great conversation. We talked about trade… and although we discussed avoiding conflict with Pakistan, trade was also an important part of our conversation. There’s no war between India and Pakistan, which is very positive,” Trump stated. He praised Modi’s leadership and the close personal rapport the two have developed over the years.
The US President also highlighted India’s Operation Sindoor, the precision strikes on terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir following the Pahalgam terror attack, asserting that US intervention and the threat of tariffs helped prevent escalation within 24 hours.
Trump described Diwali as a festival symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. He encouraged Americans and Indians alike to use the occasion to reflect on moral victories, diligence, and gratitude. “We’ll light the Diya as a symbol of faith… the glow reminds us to seek wisdom, work diligently, and give thanks for our many blessings,” he said.
The President also extended Diwali greetings to Americans observing the festival, noting its role in fostering unity, hope, and renewal. He emphasized that Diwali celebrations bring families and communities together, underscoring the festival’s moral and cultural significance.
Diwali, celebrated worldwide, has become increasingly visible in the US, particularly among Indian communities in cities such as New York, Chicago, and Washington DC. Trump’s remarks highlighted the festival’s enduring symbolism and promoted the values of peace, prosperity, and communal harmony.
