US President Donald Trump extended warm Diwali greetings to Americans on October 20, 2025, emphasizing the festival’s enduring symbolism of light overcoming darkness. In a message posted on the White House website, Trump described Diwali as a time for reflection, family bonding, and rejuvenation, underscoring its importance in promoting hope, harmony, and community spirit.
“Today, I send my best wishes to every American celebrating Diwali, the Festival of Lights. For many, this festival serves as a timeless reminder that light always triumphs over darkness,” Trump stated. He further highlighted that Diwali provides an opportunity for friends and families to unite, celebrate, and draw inspiration from hope. “As millions illuminate diyas and lanterns, we reaffirm the eternal truth that good prevails over evil. May this observance bring peace, prosperity, and lasting joy to all celebrating Americans,” he added.
Across the globe, millions of Indians participate in Diwali festivities, which have increasingly gained popularity in the United States. This year, the festival falls on October 20 and is marked by prayers, family gatherings, and lighting lamps to symbolize the victory of goodness and inner light. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended his greetings, wishing that the festival illuminate lives with positivity, harmony, and prosperity.
Several US states have formally recognized Diwali in recent years. Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and California have designated it as a state holiday. Starting January 2026, California Assembly Bill 268 will allow school closures and provide paid leave for state employees during the festival. School districts in New York City, Edison, Jersey City, and select areas in Texas, including Dallas and Houston, have begun observing Diwali as a school holiday.
Amid the festive greetings, Trump reaffirmed ongoing US-India trade tensions. Speaking from Air Force One, he noted that while Prime Minister Modi assured him that India would refrain from purchasing Russian oil, New Delhi would remain subject to “massive” tariffs if it failed to comply. Trump warned that India could continue facing significant tariff consequences if it diverged from these agreements, maintaining pressure on the bilateral trade relationship.
