External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya on Thursday in Delhi, reaffirming India’s sustained support for Colombo. The leaders discussed strategies to enhance bilateral cooperation, particularly in education and capacity-building initiatives. Sharing the development on social media platform X, Jaishankar stated that the meeting focused on strengthening India-Sri Lanka collaboration in education and skill development.
Prime Minister Amarasuriya arrived in India on Thursday for a two-day official visit, marking her first trip to the country since assuming office. During her stay until October 18, she is scheduled to meet senior political leaders to explore key bilateral issues and opportunities for collaboration across multiple sectors.
As part of her official agenda, Amarasuriya will deliver the keynote address at the ‘NDTV World Summit,’ organized jointly by NDTV and the Chintan Research Foundation in New Delhi. She will also visit the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and NITI Aayog to explore partnerships in education, innovation, and technology development. These engagements reflect both nations’ commitment to advancing academic and technological cooperation.
A distinguished alumna of Hindu College, University of Delhi, Amarasuriya will also return to her alma mater. The day’s events at the college will include a ceremonial Guard of Honor by 16 NCC cadets, a symbolic tree plantation, and cultural performances by students at the Sanganeria auditorium, reflecting the warm cultural exchange between the two nations.
In addition to education-focused visits, the Sri Lankan Prime Minister will participate in a business event aimed at strengthening trade and commercial ties between India and Sri Lanka. The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that this visit continues the tradition of regular high-level exchanges, enhancing the multifaceted bilateral partnership.
The MEA statement highlighted that the visit will further consolidate the bonds of friendship between the two countries, reinforced by India’s ‘MAHASAGAR Vision’ and its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy. By promoting collaboration across education, innovation, and trade, the visit aims to strengthen the strategic and people-to-people connections that define the India-Sri Lanka relationship.
