India has been elected for the seventh time to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2026-28 term, announced India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, on Wednesday. Expressing gratitude on social media platform X, he thanked the international delegations for their support, noting that the election reflects India’s steadfast commitment to promoting human rights and fundamental freedoms.
“India has been elected to the Human Rights Council for 2026-28. We thank all delegations for their overwhelming support. This reflects India’s unwavering commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms, and we look forward to advancing these objectives during our tenure,” Harish stated.
The UN Human Rights Council, established in 2006, serves as the primary intergovernmental body addressing global human rights issues. Comprising 47 member states, the Council provides a multilateral platform to respond to human rights crises, evaluate country-specific situations, and recommend measures to enhance the protection and promotion of human rights worldwide.
India’s Permanent Mission to the UN highlighted that the country’s growing engagement with the UN stems from its commitment to multilateralism and dialogue, which are essential to achieving shared objectives and addressing global challenges. As a founding UN member, India has consistently contributed to the implementation of the UN Charter, specialized programs, and agencies.
The statement emphasized India’s belief that UN norms and multilateral cooperation remain critical for solving modern global challenges. India continues to collaborate with other member states to address a wide range of issues, including peacebuilding, peacekeeping, sustainable development, poverty eradication, climate change, terrorism, disarmament, health crises, migration, cyber security, outer space, frontier technologies, and the push for reformed multilateralism.
This election to the UNHRC reinforces India’s dedication to upholding human rights while promoting equitable, inclusive, and collaborative solutions on the international stage, demonstrating its role as a reliable partner in advancing global peace, justice, and sustainability.
