A recent diplomatic gesture between Washington and New Delhi has stirred cautious optimism for a thaw in the frosty India–US relationship. During his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on October 11, Sergio Gor — the US Ambassador-designate — presented Modi with a framed photograph capturing his February meeting with President Donald Trump in Washington, DC. The photo bore Trump’s handwritten message, “Mr Prime Minister, you are great,” signed personally, symbolizing goodwill amid ongoing trade disputes.
Gor, a close aide to President Trump and former White House official, was nominated as the next American envoy to India in August. After his meeting with Modi, Gor expressed gratitude to Trump for the “incredible trust and confidence” shown in him, emphasizing his commitment to strengthening bilateral relations once he formally assumes office.
The gesture comes as India–US ties face turbulence over tariff hikes and visa policies. Earlier this year, the Trump administration doubled tariffs on Indian exports to 50 percent and imposed an additional 25 percent duty on crude oil imports from Russia. India called the move “unfair and unjustified.” Despite these challenges, both sides have resumed negotiations for a comprehensive trade deal valued at roughly $186 billion in goods and services exchange during 2024.
President Trump, who returned to office earlier this year, has recently adopted a more conciliatory tone, praising Modi’s leadership and expressing optimism about finalizing a mutually beneficial Free Trade Agreement. The revival of friendly exchanges between the two leaders recalls past moments of camaraderie such as the “Howdy Modi” event in Texas and “Namaste Trump” in Gujarat.
With India preparing to host the Quad Leaders Summit later this year, speculation is growing that Trump might attend, signaling renewed engagement in the Indo-Pacific region. Modi’s office stated confidence that Ambassador Gor’s tenure would “further strengthen the India–US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.” The symbolic photo, thus, may well mark the beginning of a diplomatic reset between two of the world’s largest democracies.
