India’s dairy industry has witnessed extraordinary growth over the past eleven years, expanding by 70% and solidifying the nation’s status as the world’s largest milk producer. Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah shared the achievement during the inauguration of Sabar Dairy’s new ultra-modern processing facility in Haryana on Sunday.
Highlighting the rapid transformation of the sector under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Shah said India has become the fastest-growing dairy market globally, with major gains in productivity, animal population, and infrastructure. The number of milch animals in the country has increased from 86 million in 2014–15 to 112 million, while milk production rose sharply from 146 million tonnes to 239 million tonnes. As a result, per capita milk availability has jumped from 124 grams to 471 grams per day — a rise that has directly benefited over 80 million farmers connected to the dairy ecosystem.
The newly inaugurated Sabar Dairy plant, built at a cost of $36.6 million (Rs. 325 crore), is now the largest facility in India for producing curd, buttermilk, and yogurt. With daily production capacities of 150 metric tonnes of curd, 300,000 liters of buttermilk, 1 million liters of yogurt, and 10 metric tonnes of sweets, the plant is expected to serve consumers across Delhi NCR and northern India. It will also create substantial direct and indirect employment opportunities, strengthening rural livelihoods.
Amit Shah emphasized the government’s long-term vision under White Revolution 2.0, aimed at modernizing the dairy supply chain and ensuring equitable growth for small farmers. The initiative targets procurement of over 1,007 lakh kilograms of milk per day by 2028–29 through improved cold-chain systems, digital tracking, and cooperative reforms.
He further pledged that by 2029, every Panchayat in India will have its own cooperative Samiti, enabling transparent milk collection and ensuring fair earnings for rural producers. Shah concluded by noting that India’s dairy success is a model of grassroots empowerment, blending technology, cooperation, and sustainability to secure the future of millions of farmers nationwide
