On Thursday, October 2, India marked the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi with nationwide celebrations as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu paid tribute to the revered leader at Raj Ghat in New Delhi. Recognized as the Father of the Nation, Gandhi’s life and principles of truth, non-violence, and compassion continue to inspire generations.
Prime Minister Modi emphasized Gandhi’s transformative influence on human history, noting that his courage and simplicity became powerful instruments for social change. Writing on X, Modi stated that he remains committed to following Gandhi’s ideals to build a “Viksit Bharat” — a developed and empowered India. He further highlighted Gandhi’s unwavering belief in service and empathy as tools to uplift society, asserting that the government will continue to pursue these values in shaping the nation’s future.
President Murmu also paid her respects at Raj Ghat, acknowledging Gandhi’s lifelong dedication to peace, tolerance, and social reform. She praised his efforts to eradicate untouchability, illiteracy, and addiction, and his emphasis on supporting marginalized communities. On X, she noted that Gandhi’s teachings on morality, ethics, self-reliance through the Charkha, and the dignity of labor remain relevant today, providing guidance for a cleaner, empowered, and self-sufficient India.
In addition to commemorating Gandhi, both leaders remembered the contributions of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, whose birth anniversary also falls on October 2. PM Modi described Shastri as a leader of integrity, humility, and determination, whose policies and leadership strengthened India during challenging times. Shastri’s famous slogan, ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan,’ continues to evoke patriotism and inspire efforts toward a self-reliant nation.
President Murmu honored Shastri at Vijay Ghat, laying wreaths to acknowledge his enduring legacy. The day serves as a dual remembrance, celebrating two of India’s most respected leaders who dedicated their lives to public service, ethical governance, and the empowerment of citizens. Gandhi Jayanti remains a moment for reflection on values that continue to shape India’s journey toward progress, equality, and prosperity.
