Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump share a “very positive relationship” despite recent tensions in India-US ties, according to a senior U.S. State Department official. The official confirmed that a bilateral meeting between the two leaders is expected to take place soon, along with ongoing efforts to schedule the next Quad Leaders summit, either later this year or early next year.
“I’m confident you’ll see Modi and Trump meet. They maintain a very strong rapport,” the official said, noting that multiple developments are underway in the India-US relationship, promising continued positive momentum. The official also indicated that discussions on India’s purchase of Russian oil are progressing constructively, with a resolution anticipated in the coming weeks. However, the U.S. does not plan to mediate on the Kashmir issue, emphasizing that it remains a bilateral matter between India and Pakistan.
On the trade front, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, who is leading a delegation in New York, highlighted promising developments in bilateral talks. Speaking at the event “Energy Security in a Shifting Global Landscape”, organized by the Consulate General of India, the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum, and ReNew, Goyal emphasized that energy security is a shared priority.
“We expect to expand our energy trade with the US in the years ahead. As natural partners, American involvement will play a crucial role in ensuring price stability, diversified energy sources, and unlocking broader cooperation across multiple sectors,” Goyal stated. He added that India’s growing energy imports from the US will strengthen trade relations and serve as a key pillar for the ongoing bilateral negotiations.
Goyal’s delegation is also engaged in high-level meetings with U.S. counterparts aimed at concluding a bilateral trade agreement soon. Analysts note that deeper energy collaboration, alongside progress on trade and strategic dialogues, underscores the resilience of the India-US partnership and points to sustained cooperation in both economic and geopolitical arenas.
