Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for extending warm wishes on Ukraine’s Independence Day, while also urging India to step up its role in promoting peace and diplomacy amid the continuing war with Russia.
Taking to social media platform X, Zelensky thanked Modi for his message and highlighted the importance of India’s voice in global conflict resolution. “Thank you, Prime Minister @narendramodi, for the warm greetings on Ukraine’s Independence Day. We appreciate India’s dedication to peace and dialogue. Now, as the entire world strives to end this horrible war with dignity and lasting peace, we count on India’s contribution. Every decision that strengthens diplomacy leads to better security not only in Europe, but also in the Indo-Pacific and beyond,” the Ukrainian leader posted.
Zelensky also shared a letter he received from Modi, in which the Indian Prime Minister conveyed his appreciation for the Ukrainian president’s greetings on India’s Independence Day. Modi extended his best wishes to the people of Ukraine on their national day, celebrated on August 24 each year.
In his letter, Modi wrote: “I also take this opportunity to extend my greetings to you and the people of Ukraine on the occasion of your Independence Day. I warmly recall my visit to Kyiv in August last year, and note the progress in the India-Ukraine bilateral relations since then. I look forward to working with you to further strengthen our mutually beneficial cooperation.”
Reiterating India’s consistent position on global disputes, Modi underlined that New Delhi has always favored peace and dialogue. “India has always stood on the side of peace. India remains committed to extending all possible support for sincere efforts seeking an early, abiding and peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy,” the Prime Minister’s letter stated.
India has long advocated for diplomacy as the only viable route to resolving the Ukraine-Russia conflict, positioning itself as a nation willing to mediate while maintaining balanced relations with both Kyiv and Moscow. Zelensky’s outreach underscores Kyiv’s interest in India’s growing influence, not just in Europe but also in the Indo-Pacific region, where security dynamics increasingly shape global stability.
