Prime Minister Narendra Modi held discussions with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in New Delhi on Tuesday, marking an important step in shaping India-China ties. Following the meeting, Modi highlighted that the two nations were witnessing “steady progress” in their diplomatic relations, built on mutual respect and understanding of each other’s concerns.
Reflecting on his last meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan during the BRICS Summit, Modi noted that the dialogue had laid the foundation for improved bilateral engagement. He added that he looked forward to continuing talks with Xi in Tianjin later this month during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit. According to Modi, a stable and constructive partnership between India and China would contribute greatly to both regional and global peace.
During the talks, Wang Yi conveyed a personal message and an invitation from President Xi for the upcoming SCO Summit, scheduled for August 31 in China. Ahead of his engagement with the prime minister, Wang Yi also met with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. Their discussions focused on sensitive topics including border management, de-escalation measures, and the long-standing boundary question.
On Monday, Wang Yi had a separate meeting with External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar. Both sides exchanged views on a wide range of issues that covered bilateral cooperation, regional stability, and global challenges. The Indian delegation also brought up terrorism, including cross-border activities, emphasizing that it must be addressed in all forms. The Chinese minister agreed that counter-terrorism efforts should remain a top priority.
Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s stance on maintaining peace and stability along the border, underlining the need for a fair and mutually acceptable settlement of boundary disputes. His upcoming visit to China for the SCO Summit will be his first since 2018, reflecting cautious optimism in efforts to ease tensions and rebuild trust between the two neighbors.
