The Indian government has intensified efforts to promote turmeric and other spice exports through the “Sustainability in Spice Sector through Progressive, Innovative and Collaborative Interventions for Export Development” (SPICED) scheme, implemented by the Spices Board. The initiative focuses on raising the quality, value, and global competitiveness of Indian spices by providing support for food safety compliance, post-harvest handling, processing, and value addition. It also conducts training programs to empower stakeholders, improve product quality, and foster entrepreneurial growth in the spice sector.
To ensure turmeric shipments meet the standards of importing countries, the government evaluates consignments through accredited quality evaluation laboratories. Additionally, domestic and international Buyer Seller meets are organized to directly connect farmers, exporters, and global buyers, thereby creating new market opportunities and strengthening trade networks.
In October 2023, the government established the National Turmeric Board to further capitalize on the global potential of turmeric and its derivative products. The Board’s mandate includes promoting new product development, encouraging value addition, and increasing international awareness and consumption of turmeric. It also supports market research, infrastructure development, and logistics improvements to streamline export processes.
The Board places a strong emphasis on capacity building for turmeric growers, skill development, and documenting traditional knowledge. It also promotes research into the medicinal properties of turmeric and sustainable practices to maintain a resilient supply chain.
India continues to dominate the global turmeric market, with exports accounting for 58% to 66% of worldwide trade between 2020 and 2024. The country’s highest export value was achieved in 2024, totaling approximately $333.25 million. Key international buyers include Bangladesh, the UAE, the United States, Malaysia, and Morocco, underscoring India’s central role in the global spice trade.
Through the SPICED scheme and the National Turmeric Board, India is strengthening its position as the world’s leading turmeric exporter, enhancing quality standards, market access, and international competitiveness while supporting farmers and entrepreneurs across the supply chain.
