Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a significant two-nation diplomatic tour to the United Kingdom and the Maldives from July 23 to July 26, 2025. The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed the visit on Sunday, highlighting its importance for India’s trade and regional security agendas.
During his visit to the UK, Prime Minister Modi is expected to formally announce the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), a major bilateral economic pact initially confirmed by both nations on May 6. The trade deal, which faced delays due to frequent leadership changes in the UK since negotiations began in 2022, has been described by British officials as the most substantial and economically impactful bilateral agreement between the two countries.
Prime Minister Modi will engage in extensive discussions with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, covering the full spectrum of India-UK relations. Their talks will address not only trade and economic cooperation but also defense ties, technological collaboration, climate action, education, healthcare, and people-to-people connections. Modi is also scheduled to meet King Charles III during his stay in the UK.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal’s visit to the UK in June laid the groundwork for the trade deal announcement. The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) between India and the UK will be a central focus, aiming to boost collaboration in multiple sectors.
Following his UK visit, Modi will travel to the Maldives on July 25 at the invitation of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. His trip coincides with the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations on July 26, where he will serve as the Guest of Honour.
During his stay, Modi and President Muizzu will review progress on the India-Maldives Joint Vision for a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership. This framework was agreed upon during Muizzu’s visit to India in October 2024 and focuses on enhancing trade, investment, and maritime defense cooperation in the region.
