
Cal Poly Pomona’s College of Business Administration has welcomed Dr. Pia Gupta, a prominent Indian American academic leader, as its new Associate Dean of Undergraduate Student Success. Her appointment marks a pivotal step in the college’s mission to foster academic achievement and career readiness among students.
According to Dean Sandeep Krishnamurthy, this leadership change signals the start of a transformative era focused on preparing students for successful careers through hands-on guidance and tailored support systems. Dr. Gupta will spearhead initiatives aimed at improving academic outcomes and strengthening the pathways that connect students with real-world economic opportunities.
With over 20 years of leadership in higher education, Dr. Gupta brings a wealth of experience to her new role. She previously served as the Chair of the Department of Finance at Cal State Long Beach (CSULB), where she led impactful changes from 2019 onward. Under her leadership, the department expanded its academic programs, enriched student engagement, and enhanced faculty hiring and retention practices.
Her commitment to student success is reflected in her work with graduation initiatives, academic advising improvements, and early alert systems, all of which contributed to higher student performance and retention. She also played an essential role in AACSB accreditation efforts, helping CSULB secure three successful re-accreditation cycles through collaborative strategic planning.
Dr. Gupta has also pioneered experiential learning opportunities. She co-founded the CSULB Finance Symposium, a statewide event connecting students with industry professionals, and helped establish the university’s STEM-designated Master of Financial Analytics program.
Her scholarly work has appeared in prestigious publications, including the Journal of Corporate Finance and Journal of Business Finance and Accounting. Her research covers corporate governance, financial markets, and innovative teaching methods.
Beyond academia, Dr. Gupta has served as President of the Western Decision Sciences Institute and actively supports nonprofits that promote global education and underserved communities.
Expressing her enthusiasm, Dr. Gupta said she is eager to collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to create an inclusive, student-centered environment where learning thrives and lives are transformed through meaningful academic experiences.
