Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be awarded Namibia’s highest civilian recognition, the Order of the Most Ancient Welwitschia Mirabilis, during his state visit to the African nation. The honor reflects Namibia’s appreciation of PM Modi’s efforts in strengthening the longstanding and friendly ties between the two countries.
Modi arrived in Windhoek, Namibia’s capital, on Wednesday morning, marking the final leg of his five-nation tour, which included Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, Argentina, and Brazil. This trip also marks his first-ever visit to Namibia and represents only the third time in history that an Indian Prime Minister has visited the country.
The visit comes at the invitation of Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and underscores the growing strategic and diplomatic cooperation between India and Namibia. Modi’s itinerary includes bilateral discussions with President Nandi-Ndaitwah, an address to the Namibian Parliament, and a tribute to Dr. Sam Nujoma, the late Founding Father and first President of Namibia.
The conferment of the Order of the Most Ancient Welwitschia Mirabilis signifies the depth of mutual respect and admiration between the two nations. This prestigious award is reserved for distinguished global leaders and individuals who have made significant contributions to Namibia’s relations with the world.
Modi’s visit highlights India’s ongoing commitment to deepening partnerships across Africa. With Namibia, India shares a strong connection rooted in shared democratic values, capacity-building support, and collaboration in areas such as education, healthcare, energy, and technology.
India has consistently supported Namibia through initiatives such as scholarships, training programs, and infrastructure projects. This visit aims to open doors for further collaboration in emerging fields like green energy, digital innovation, and sustainable development.
The award ceremony and Modi’s engagements in Namibia mark a high point in bilateral relations and reaffirm India’s strategic interest in building ties across the African continent. By honoring PM Modi, Namibia acknowledges India’s global leadership and its dedication to fostering equitable partnerships.
The Prime Minister’s visit is expected to strengthen political, economic, and cultural cooperation, laying a renewed foundation for future India-Namibia engagement at all levels.
