On June 26, former US President Donald Trump unleashed a fierce verbal attack on New York State Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani after the 33-year-old emerged as the leading candidate in the Democratic primary for New York City’s mayoral race. Venting on his platform Truth Social, Trump labelled Mamdani a “100% Communist Lunatic,” expressing outrage over the party’s direction. “The Democrats have officially lost it,” Trump wrote, reacting to Mamdani’s surprising success. “We’ve had far-left candidates before, but this is beyond belief.”
Trump didn’t stop there. In another fiery post, he mocked Mamdani’s appearance, voice, and intelligence, and took jabs at his political supporters—including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other progressive representatives. He ridiculed Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer as well, sarcastically dubbing him the “Great Palestinian Senator” for allegedly supporting Mamdani’s platform.
The former president went on to suggest that Democrats nominate what he described as the “Low IQ Candidate” Jasmine Crockett for president and appoint Ocasio-Cortez and her allies to top cabinet positions. “With Mamdani set to become New York’s Communist Mayor, this country is in real trouble,” Trump warned in another message.
Zohran Mamdani, who represents Queens in the New York State Assembly, is known for his left-wing activism and controversial foreign policy views. He has openly supported the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement targeting Israel, has advocated to “globalize the intifada,” and has described India as a “Hindu fascist state.” His sharp criticism of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also drawn attention.
In the recent Democratic primary, Mamdani led the polls with 43.5% of the vote, while former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo followed with 36.4%. Since no candidate has achieved a majority over 50%, the outcome now depends on ranked-choice voting and second-preference ballots. Cuomo has hinted at a possible independent run in the general election this November, but Mamdani remains the likely favorite given the city’s historically strong Democratic base.
As the political spotlight intensifies on Mamdani’s unconventional platform, the nation watches closely to see if he will indeed become the next mayor of America’s most influential city.
