On May 27, 2025, NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan announced that Dr. Anitha Srinivasan will assume the role of Chief Medical Officer beginning June 1. She is the first woman and woman of color to be appointed CMO at Metropolitan Hospital, and one of only two female CMOs among the city’s 11 public hospitals.
Dr. Srinivasan succeeds Dr. John T. Pellicone, who served as CMO for ten years. She brings over 20 years of experience to the position, having started her career with a surgical residency at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln in the 1990s. After her tenure at an academic research institute, she joined Metropolitan Hospital as an attending surgeon and took on the role of associate professor of surgery at New York Medical College.
Dr. Srinivasan is the founder and director of the Metropolitan Breast Cancer Center and has held key leadership roles, including Deputy Chief Medical Officer since 2019 and Director of Perioperative Services since 2020. She will be the third individual to assume the role of Chief Marketing Officer at Metropolitan.
Julian S. John, CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan, praised Dr. Pellicone’s decade-long leadership and expressed strong confidence in Dr. Srinivasan’s vision and compassionate approach to advancing patient care.
Dr. Srinivasan said, “Serving as the first female CMO at this institution is a profound honor. Together, we will continue delivering top-quality care and ensure every patient feels valued and heard.”
Metropolitan Hospital, with 338 beds, serves East Harlem and nearby communities, providing care to over 350,000 clinic patients and more than 50,000 emergency visitors yearly. It is part of NYC Health + Hospitals, the largest municipal healthcare system in the United States.
