In a key diplomatic interaction, Dutch defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans held talks with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in The Hague, discussing regional and global security issues, while emphasising the need to enhance the defense partnership between India and the Netherlands.
Brekelmans stressed the growing strategic value of working closely with India. Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Brekelmans emphasised the importance of close collaboration with India amid current global uncertainties. He expressed that it was a privilege to welcome External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, noting that their discussions focused on security concerns in both Asia and Europe, along with the strengthening defense cooperation between the two nations. He also conveyed optimism about strengthening bilateral cooperation.
The meeting highlighted the growing alignment between Europe and Asia in addressing common threats and underscored the importance of strong defense cooperation.
Jaishankar, who is presently on a formal trip to the Netherlands, Denmark, and Germany from May 19 to 24, expressed similar views. He expressed his satisfaction at meeting defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans in The Hague, where they discussed their countries’ security outlooks and challenges, and explored the advantages of establishing a bilateral defense partnership.
During his visit, Jaishankar also interacted with members of the Indian diaspora in the Netherlands, acknowledging their role in cementing ties between the two nations. He mentioned that he engaged with members of the Indian community this evening and appreciated their role in strengthening the ties between India and the Netherlands.
The visit comes amid heightened global tensions, including the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. Countries like the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark have expressed solidarity with India following the attack, reinforcing their support for India in its fight against terrorism.
Jaishankar’s diplomatic tour will continue with high-level meetings in Denmark and Germany, where the agenda includes bilateral ties and regional and international matters of mutual interest. Notably, his visit to Germany follows the recent appointment of Friedrich Merz as the new Federal Chancellor.
