This Sunday, Ashfaq Syed will be officially sworn into the Naperville City Council, marking a groundbreaking moment as the first Indian American and Muslim ever to hold a seat on the city’s governing board.
Syed expressed pride and gratitude for the opportunity, stating that his election is a moment of honor for both himself and the communities he represents. “My Indian and Muslim friends, families—everyone is thrilled,” he said.
Originally from Hyderabad, India, Syed credits his upbringing there with shaping his values and worldview. After moving to Naperville eight years ago, he brought with him a strong professional background in finance and banking. His civic contributions also speak volumes—he has held leadership roles such as president of the Naperville Public Library Board of Trustees, board member at Loaves & Fishes Community Services, and vice chair of Civic Engagement at the Islamic Center of Naperville.
“I don’t believe in being a passive participant. When I join an organization, I commit myself completely,” he explained, emphasizing his active engagement and leadership style.
His cultural and spiritual foundation is central to his approach. “My upbringing, my Islamic and Muslim values—they’ve empowered me with education, freedom, and compassion,” Syed added.
His historic appointment also holds potential to inspire others. According to Dr. Suzanne Chod of North Central College, Syed’s election can serve as a powerful signal to underrepresented groups. “Being the first can have a profound role model effect,” she noted. “Many in Naperville may now envision themselves in leadership roles.”
Data from the 2022 American Community Survey shows Naperville’s population as 65.1% white, 20.6% Asian, 6.5% Hispanic or Latino, 4.3% Black, and 0.2% American Indian or Alaska Native.
Syed emphasizes he’s not just representing one group. “I will work for every individual and every community in Naperville,” he said. “As a council member, my role is to support and uplift everyone—no matter their background.”
