India recorded its highest-ever monthly Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue in April 2025, signaling strong economic recovery and robust tax compliance. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman attributed this landmark achievement to the resilience of the Indian economy and the power of cooperative federalism.
According to data shared by the finance ministry, the total GST revenue collected in April amounted to approximately $28.3 billion, marking a 12.6% increase from the $25.2 billion collected during the same month last year. Net GST revenue for the month stood at $25 billion, up 9.1% from April 2024’s $23 million.
In a post on X, FM Sitharaman extended her appreciation to taxpayers for their continued trust in India’s GST structure. She emphasized their critical role in advancing the country’s vision of a developed nation. The Finance Minister also recognized the commitment of state finance ministers, GST departments across India, and the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) for their tireless contributions.
The spike in collections is largely attributed to enhanced economic activity and improved taxpayer compliance. GST from domestic sources alone rose 10.7% year-on-year to around $22.8 billion, while collections from imports surged 20.8% to nearly $5.6 billion. Refund payments also increased sharply, up 48.3% to $3.3 billion during the month.
March 2025 also showed a strong performance with GST revenue hitting $23.5 billion, a 9.9% rise compared to the previous year. On a month-over-month basis, April’s revenue was 6.8% higher than February’s $22 billion.
In March, the GST revenue details revealed $4.6 billion from Central GST, $6 billion from State GST, $11.5 billion from Integrated GST, and $1.5 billion from compensation cess. These figures marked a modest increase compared to February’s slightly lower collections across the board.
Top contributors to the March GST figures included Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh, reinforcing the economic heft of these states in driving national revenue figures.
India’s surging GST collections underscore not just economic revival but also growing efficiency in its tax framework—strengthening the fiscal foundation of the nation.
