India has maintained its third position in the US Green Building Council’s (USGBC) annual ranking of the top 10 countries and regions for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification in 2024. The ranking, released on Thursday, highlights the global progress in sustainable building design and operations outside the United States.
Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) oversees LEED certifications in India, promoting the adoption of sustainable and energy-efficient infrastructure nationwide. In 2024, India saw 370 projects certified under LEED, covering 8.50 million gross square meters (GSM) (91.5 million square feet) across various buildings and spaces.
China topped the rankings with over 25 million GSM of LEED-certified space, followed by Canada with 10 million GSM. While the United States was not included in the list, it remains the world’s largest LEED market, with over 56 million GSM certified during the year.
Commenting on India’s ranking, Gopalakrishnan Padmanabhan, Managing Director for Southeast Asia & the Middle East at GBCI, stated that the country’s achievement reflects its strong commitment to sustainable development and climate action. He emphasized that India’s growing green-certified infrastructure aligns with global sustainability goals, contributing to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030.
