Indian tourists traveling to Dubai can now enjoy a seamless cashless shopping experience, thanks to Unified Payments Interface (UPI). Through a strategic collaboration between NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) and Magnati, a leading payment solutions provider, UPI services are being introduced at Dubai Duty-Free. Initially available at duty-free shops, the service is expected to expand into various sectors, including retail, hospitality, transport, and supermarkets.
NIPL’s CEO, Mr. Ritesh Shukla, expressed that the initiative reflects their goal to create a global digital payment network for Indians. Similarly, Magnati’s Managing Director, Mr. Salim Awan, highlighted the potential of this partnership to simplify cross-border transactions, offering a smooth payment experience for Indian travelers and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).
This move is set to benefit over 12 million Indian tourists visiting the UAE each year, with India emerging as the top source of visitors to Dubai in 2023, contributing 11.9 million arrivals. UPI payments are already functional in seven countries, including Bhutan, Nepal, Singapore, and France, allowing international transactions through apps like BHIM, PhonePe, Paytm, and Google Pay.
For payments, users simply scan the merchant’s QR code, input the amount, select their bank account, and confirm the transaction with their UPI PIN via the BHIM app. Payments are deducted in Indian rupees, incorporating currency conversion rates and fees. This innovation promises to elevate the travel experience for Indian visitors in Dubai and beyond.
