The One Station One Product (OSOP) initiative, a government scheme designed to promote local crafts and products at railway stations throughout India, has experienced substantial growth. The program now boasts 1,854 operational outlets showcasing a diverse range of Indian products.
Central Railway alone operates 157 of these outlets, demonstrating strong support for the initiative. Within the Central Railway, the Bhusaval Division stands out with 25 successful OSOP outlets, all managed by women, highlighting the significant role women play in the initiative. Bhusaval Divisional Railway Manager Ity Pandey emphasized that these outlets contribute positively to the local economy.
The widespread adoption of OSOP across the country aligns with the government’s vision to transform railway stations into dynamic marketplaces that celebrate local craftsmanship. In line with the “vocal for local” vision, the scheme now facilitates the promotion of indigenous products at key railway stations.
The outlets not only showcase India’s rich cultural heritage but also create economic opportunities for marginalized communities. Initially, these stalls were allotted for short periods with a minimal registration fee. However, due to increasing demand, the duration for which these outlets are allocated has been extended to three months, offering local entrepreneurs more stability and growth.
The initiative has notably empowered women, especially in the Bhusaval Division. Women entrepreneurs are showcasing a variety of local products, such as Paithani sarees, purses, roasted products in Bhusaval and Jalgaon, and bamboo crafts in Akola. Many of these outlets are run by women from lower-income backgrounds. These outlets not only serve as platforms for profitable businesses but also provide training and job opportunities to other women in the community, as noted by Pandey.
