Filmmaker Payal Kapadia has made history with her film All We Imagine As Light, which earned two nominations at the 82nd Annual Golden Globe Awards. The film, recognized globally, is nominated in the Best Director (Motion Picture) category, marking the first time an Indian director has been nominated in this prestigious category. It also earned a nomination for Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language.
The nominations were announced on December 9 by Mindy Kaling and Morris Chestnut, and the recognition of All We Imagine As Light is a significant achievement for Kapadia and Indian cinema. Bollywood stars such as Anil Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, and Rajkummar Rao celebrated the historic moment on social media, congratulating Kapadia for the monumental recognition.
The film, which stars Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam, follows the story of Prabha, a troubled nurse, and her roommate Anu as they embark on a journey of emotional exploration. It is a co-production between Petit Chaos (France) and Chalk & Cheese and Anotherth (India). Earlier this year, All We Imagine As Light made history at the Cannes Film Festival by winning the Grand Prix, marking the first Indian film to compete in the festival’s main section in 30 years.
Before its Golden Globe nominations, the film had already received significant acclaim, winning the Best International Feature Award at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards and the Gotham Awards 2024. The Golden Globe nominees were announced, with All We Imagine As Light standing out among other films in the Best Director category. The 82nd Golden Globe Awards will be streamed live in India on Lionsgate Play on January 6, 2025.
