The Flower Mound Town Council in Texas has honored two Indian Americans, Kirti Patel and Samadhi Basnayake, with the 2024 Outstanding Citizenship Award for their contributions to community life. Their dedication highlights a blend of experience and youthful enthusiasm, both aimed at enhancing the quality of life in Flower Mound.
Kirti Patel was named the winner in the individual category. For over 15 years, she has organized community events like Holi and Diwali, promoting unity and cultural awareness. She leads the Dancing Diva group, a collective of 50 women of various ages who share a passion for dance. Through her volunteer efforts with seniors and youth mentorship programs, Kirti has positively impacted multiple generations. This year alone, she received over 20 nominations. Her award includes a one-year membership to the Community Activity Center, a VIP pass for Independence Fest 2025, and invitations to local town events.
In the youth category, Samadhi Basnayake was recognized for her dedication to music and service. A pianist since age 5, she has spent the past decade performing at local assisted living and memory care centers. Her performances bring joy and improve the well-being of the elderly who may not be able to attend traditional concerts. Now a high school student, Samadhi also mentors younger music students, demonstrating dedication and empathy. As part of her award, she received a day pass to the Community Activity Center.
Both Kirti Patel and Samadhi Basnayake will have their names displayed on a plaque in Town Hall, along with engraved awards celebrating their contributions. Their efforts are shining examples of community service, cultural enrichment, and compassion in Flower Mound.
