Prime Minister Narendra Modi has solidified his position as the most trusted representative of the Global South. Through consistent advocacy at international platforms, Modi has spotlighted the concerns of developing countries, enhancing India’s credibility on the global stage. His recent receipt of the highest honors from three nations and a second-highest award from another within five days underscores his influential status.
PM Modi’s recognition includes honors from Dominica, Nigeria, Guyana, and Barbados. Dominica acknowledged his leadership during the COVID-19 crisis when India supplied 70,000 AstraZeneca doses and promoted climate resilience efforts. Nigeria awarded Modi the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger, an honor last bestowed upon Queen Elizabeth II in 1969, recognizing India’s humanitarian support and economic contributions, including a $100 million concessional loan for development projects.
Guyana awarded Modi its highest honor, the Order of Excellence, reflecting the deepening ties, especially in the energy sector, where India supports Guyana’s burgeoning oil industry. Guyana, with a significant Indian-origin population, also benefits from India’s defense collaboration, such as the delivery of Dornier aircraft under a $23.37 million line of credit. Barbados will soon bestow its Honorary Order of Freedom on Modi, further affirming his global influence.
Modi’s leadership extends beyond awards. India’s G20 Presidency emphasized human-centric globalization, digital infrastructure, and amplified the voices of the Global South, culminating in the African Union’s inclusion in the G20. Brazil’s new Global Hunger and Poverty Alliance builds on India’s initiatives, reflecting Modi’s lasting impact.
India has also prioritized humanitarian aid, from Africa to Ukraine, while promoting renewable energy and sustainable practices. Initiatives like ‘Arogya Maitri’ and substantial financial contributions underscore India’s role as a first responder in crises and a steadfast partner in development for the Global South.
