Guyana’s President Mohamed Irfaan Ali hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “champion among leaders” for his exceptional leadership and invaluable contributions to the developing world. Speaking at a gathering in Georgetown, President Ali praised Modi’s governance strategies, emphasizing their adoption in Guyana and beyond. “It is an honor to host you here. Your leadership has inspired the developing world, setting frameworks for growth that many nations are implementing,” Ali remarked.
Prime Minister Modi arrived in Guyana on Tuesday, becoming the first Indian leader to visit the nation in 56 years. His visit followed the G20 Summit in Brazil and was marked by a ceremonial welcome from President Ali, Prime Minister Mark Anthony Phillips, and several ministers.
During their meeting at the State House in Georgetown, Modi and Ali discussed wide-ranging topics, including defense, energy, health, pharmaceuticals, digital infrastructure, and UPI systems. The leaders also signed multiple bilateral agreements in agriculture, technology transfer, and other sectors. As a gesture of environmental commitment, they planted a sapling in Georgetown under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative.
On social media platform X, Modi expressed gratitude for the warm reception, saying, “Arrived in Guyana a short while ago. My visit aims to deepen the friendship between our nations.”
President Ali introduced Modi to CARICOM leaders attending the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit, emphasizing the strengthened ties between India and the Caribbean, built on shared values and mutual progress. Modi also met with leaders from Grenada and Barbados and received the prestigious ‘Key to the City of Georgetown,’ symbolizing the close bond between India and Guyana.
Highlighting his personal connection to Guyana, Modi recalled visiting the nation 24 years ago and underscored the enduring ties formed by Indian immigrants 180 years ago. Today, Guyana’s Indian community plays a pivotal role in its development. Modi also lauded Ali for his special connection with India, mentioning his participation in the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas event and efforts to advance bilateral cooperation.
India’s contribution to Guyana’s defense includes two Dornier aircrafts supplied last year. Modi pledged to further support Guyana’s military through scholarships and training. President Ali called Modi’s visit a significant milestone, fostering collaboration across various sectors and enhancing India-CARICOM relations.
India’s continued commitment to renewable energy and climate change initiatives was also highlighted, including a $150 million credit line to CARICOM countries discussed during the first India-CARICOM Summit.
