Dr. Jagdeep Singh Bachher, a distinguished alumnus of the University of Waterloo, has been appointed as the institution’s 12th chancellor, bringing a wealth of global experience to his new ceremonial role. Serving as Waterloo’s ceremonial head, Dr. Bachher will preside over convocation ceremonies, confer degrees, and represent the university at public events. His appointment marks a new era of leadership aligned with Waterloo’s values of innovation, purpose, and collaboration.
Dr. Bachher, who holds degrees from Waterloo in engineering and a doctorate, has been involved with the university since 2018 as a Board of Governors member and vice-chair. Reflecting on his long-standing connection with Waterloo, he recalls the memorable moments of his own convocation ceremonies, recognizing the vital support from family and friends along his academic journey.
Currently, Dr. Bachher is the chief investment officer at the University of California, where he oversees an investment portfolio valued at approximately $180 billion USD, spanning pensions, endowments, and investment funds. His leadership has fostered a collaborative investment approach known as “The UC Investments Way,” which has significantly grown UC’s assets.
With a background in both public and private sectors, including positions at Manulife Financial and Alberta Investment Management Corporation, Dr. Bachher brings a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing today’s interconnected world. As Waterloo’s chancellor, he will advocate for impactful solutions to global issues, foster connections with alumni worldwide, and promote partnerships with industry, government, and academia to further enhance the university’s contributions on a global scale.
