The Indo-American Association (IAA), a Houston-based cultural institution, is excited to introduce its Artist Development Program, starting on October 22, 2024. This four-week initiative is designed to help artists of color, including those from Indian, Pakistani, Black, Indigenous, and other backgrounds, strengthen their skills and establish stable careers in the arts. The program aims to benefit artists at all stages, whether emerging, mid-career, or established, by providing them with a comprehensive curriculum focused on industry knowledge and career sustainability.
Participants will gain valuable insights into the arts industry, practical tools for enhancing their artistic practices, and strategies to succeed in a competitive environment. By the end of the program, artists will have learned how to develop programs that meet audience expectations and market demands, all while staying true to their unique artistic vision. They will also discover how to present original, marketable works without losing authenticity, which will help them grow their personal brand in the arts sector.
The program is led by Sonny K. Mehta, Artistic Director of Riyaaz Qawwali, a renowned artist with 18 years of global touring experience. Mehta’s work has been recognized by prestigious organizations like the White House and featured in prominent media outlets such as NPR, The New York Times, and The Huffington Post. His expertise in both the creative and business aspects of the arts will offer participants an unparalleled learning experience.
Sheetal Bedi, CEO of IAA, expressed the organization’s ongoing commitment to empowering BIPOC artists, noting that the program provides vital tools and business knowledge often overlooked in the arts. Applications for the program are now open, and interested artists can apply through IAA’s official website.
