A heartwarming image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacting with a Punganur cow has sparked pride across Andhra Pradesh. The cow, chosen by the PM’s office, symbolises the state’s heritage at his residence. Andhra Pradesh’s IT Minister Nara Lokesh expressed excitement over this representation of local pride.
The Punganur cow, a dwarf breed from Andhra Pradesh, faced near extinction due to its lower milk yield compared to hybrids. However, the breed’s revival is attributed to Mission Punganur, a conservation initiative supported by both state and central governments. Known for its unique size and quality milk, the Punganur cow’s milk, often termed “golden” for its high nutritional content, is valued in religious offerings.
The breed’s milk is rich in essential nutrients and is noted for its high fat content, which is double that of milk from other cows. Despite producing less milk daily compared to hybrid breeds, the Punganur cow’s milk is prized for its health benefits.
The Punganur cow, admired for its appearance and gentle nature, is also considered a symbol of prestige and good fortune in India. Its cost ranges from $1,200 to $12,000, with many cows now reared by temples and landowners in Andhra Pradesh.
