Kamala Harris hasn’t been a well-known figure to many, and her role as Vice President has often been underestimated and dismissed. With just over two months left in the election cycle, the Democrats are facing the challenge of familiarizing the public with their candidate while simultaneously pushing their campaign machinery into high gear. The party has rallied behind Kamala, offering her its full support to build the necessary momentum.
The convention was meticulously planned to highlight themes of democracy, patriotism, unity, hope, and optimism. The lineup of speakers was exceptional, offering something for everyone in the audience. The speeches varied from energizing to electrifying, with enthusiasm that was tangible among those in attendance.
After learning more about Kamala Harris through her biography and from those who have worked closely with her, I have a better understanding of who she is. Her life story, as a bi-racial, middle-class individual raised by a single mother and a product of divorce, resonates with the diverse audiences she addresses. Her career as District Attorney, Attorney General, and Senator reflects her commitment to serving people from all walks of life, regardless of their background.
With Tim Walz as her running mate, Kamala has strategically filled all potential gaps in her candidacy. Walz, a middle-class father with strong family values, is a white male, gun owner, coach, veteran, and teacher, making him a well-rounded and relatable choice. Together, they present a trustworthy and effective team.
Kamala delivered her convention speech with calm confidence and clarity. She was articulate and composed, speaking about her family, her work before Washington, and her achievements as Vice President. She addressed her involvement in border security, foreign affairs, and recent global events in Ukraine and the Middle East, taking a firm stance on Israel’s right to defend itself while acknowledging the suffering in Gaza. Her words carried weight, and her tone was resolute.
The convention was filled with those already convinced of her capabilities, but Kamala needs to strategize to win over undecided voters and secure swing states. She’s been given the opportunity to lead not just as a member of a political party, but as a representative of all Americans. To succeed, she must persuade the nation that she is the agent of change and the best candidate to lead the world’s most powerful country.
Kamala Harris remains closely associated with the current administration, and the challenge lies in whether she can distinguish herself from President Biden. She will need to address uncomfortable questions and demonstrate a deep understanding of crucial issues such as the economy, inflation, jobs, immigration, the environment, and more. Clear policies and plans will be essential for her credibility.
The convention ended on a high note, with thunderous applause and infectious energy. There was a sense of happiness and hope, along with a surge in volunteer support. The younger generation is particularly excited, and even some Republicans have shown their endorsement through the “Republicans for Harris” group. With debates, interviews, and intense campaigning ahead, Kamala needs to be well-prepared to counter the Republicans, who have a seasoned candidate and ample preparation time.
As an Indian American mother who values democracy and freedom, I share Kamala’s values and have faith in her. However, I believe she needs more than just our endorsements—she needs to act quickly and decisively to ensure victory against a well-prepared opposition. It’s time to spring into action to secure her success.
And finally, it’s time to stop mispronouncing our Vice President’s name. While some may be slow to learn, after three and a half years, I’m ready to settle for “President Harris”—it certainly has a nice ring to it!
