On the third day of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago, Hindu prayers were beautifully integrated into the event’s stage, adding a unique touch to the proceedings.
The convention, which began on Monday, followed the Republican gathering held in Milwaukee a month prior. Its theme, “For the People, For Our Future,” sets the tone for the event.
Prominent figures such as former President Bill Clinton, ex-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, television personality Oprah Winfrey, and Kamala Harris’ running mate Tim Walz took center stage on day three. Clinton’s speech was particularly notable as he endorsed Kamala Harris for the upcoming presidential election, urging Americans to support her as the “president of joy.”
Clinton, who served as the 42nd President of the United States, expressed a desire for a more inclusive and forward-looking America. He emphasized the need for leadership that addresses real problems and seizes opportunities, a vision he believes Harris embodies.
Kamala Harris, the first Asian American and woman of color to lead a major party ticket, was officially recognized as the Democratic nominee last month. After President Biden withdrew from the race, he endorsed Harris, and the party unified behind her.
Harris, daughter of Jamaican-born economist Donald Harris and Indian-born cancer researcher Shyamala Gopalan, is set to accept the presidential nomination formally on Thursday, under the theme “For the Future.”
While a roll call vote to formally nominate candidates is a tradition, Harris secured her nomination through a majority of delegates in an early August virtual vote. A ceremonial roll call is still scheduled to occur at the convention.
The convention’s programming had to be revised significantly after Biden’s exit and Harris’ endorsement, reflecting the rapid changes in the Democratic race.
