On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at Kannur Airport before heading to Wayanad to evaluate the relief and rehabilitation efforts following recent landslides. At the airport, he was welcomed by Governor Arif Mohammed Khan and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
PM Modi then traveled to Wayanad by Air Force helicopter, with Governor Khan, Chief Minister Vijayan, and Union Minister of State for Petroleum Suresh Gopi accompanying him. He plans to conduct an aerial survey of the damaged areas.
During his visit, the Prime Minister will tour the affected sites and receive briefings from rescue teams about ongoing evacuation efforts. He will also visit relief camps and hospitals to meet and interact with survivors.
Following his on-the-ground inspections, PM Modi will chair a review meeting to receive a detailed update on the incident and relief efforts.
The landslides that hit Chooralmala and Mundakkai in Wayanad on July 30 caused significant damage, with 226 bodies and 403 body parts recovered so far, according to district officials.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has requested the central government to declare the disaster a national emergency. The Kerala state government has committed to providing immediate assistance, including financial support and relocation help.
Affected families in Mundakkai and Chooralmala will receive a daily allowance of approximately $3.60 per person for up to two individuals per family for 30 days. Families with bedridden or long-term hospitalized patients can receive allowances for three individuals. Additionally, each family residing in relief camps will receive immediate financial aid of around $120.
