Harini Krishnan, a well-known Indian American community organizer for the Democratic Party in the Bay Area, has been working tirelessly in support of Kamala Harris’s 2024 Presidential campaign. After President Joe Biden exited the race, Krishnan and her team quickly transitioned their efforts from supporting Biden to rallying behind Harris. This shift has energized the campaign, resulting in thousands of volunteers joining within just ten days.
Krishnan, who co-directs the South Asians for Harris initiative, has a deep connection with Harris, having supported her since her days as California’s Senator, Attorney General, and District Attorney. Krishnan has been instrumental in organizing grassroots efforts, including the successful South Asians for Biden campaign in 2020. Her work with Harris dates back to the 2019 Presidential campaign, where she served as a lead volunteer organizer.
Krishnan believes that this time around, Harris is a much stronger Presidential candidate, having gained valuable experience as Vice President and building a global profile. She highlights Harris’s commitment to reproductive freedom, social justice, diversity, small businesses, and the economy, making her a formidable candidate.
The Indian American and South Asian communities have shown overwhelming support for Harris, with significant fundraising and volunteer efforts underway. Initiatives like South Asian Women for Harris have raised substantial funds and attracted thousands of volunteers in a short period.
Krishnan also notes that her relationship with Harris goes beyond politics, describing her as a friend. She is actively involved in campaign events and is looking forward to supporting Harris at the upcoming Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where Harris is expected to be formally nominated as the Presidential candidate. Krishnan, who is also involved in arts advocacy and serves as a California Democratic Party finance committee co-chair, is organizing a meet-and-greet event for the Indian American community in support of Harris this weekend.
