Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to address the high-level UN General Assembly session on September 26, as per a provisional list of speakers released by the UN. The 79th session of the UN General Assembly will occur from September 24-30, with the general debate being a key highlight of the event.
The provisional list indicates that India’s “Head of Government” is scheduled for an afternoon address on September 26. However, this schedule may change as the UN updates attendance, schedules, and speaking slots leading up to the session.
Traditionally, Brazil opens the general debate on September 24, followed by the United States. US President Joe Biden is expected to deliver his final address to global leaders from the UN podium before the November presidential election.
Prime Minister Modi, embarking on his historic third term, last took the UNGA stage in September 2021. His upcoming speech follows his visit to the UN headquarters in June of the previous year, where he led the Yoga Day commemoration before heading to Washington, DC for a State Visit hosted by President Biden.
Before the General Debate kicks off, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will present his report, setting the stage for an address by the President of the 79th General Assembly session. Guterres is also organizing the Summit of the Future at UN Headquarters, which includes action days on September 20-21 and a Summit on September 22-23.
World leaders will gather at the UN to adopt the Pact for the Future, which includes a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations as annexes. The UN has described the Summit as a high-level event aimed at forging a new international consensus on delivering a better present and safeguarding the future.
As the high-level week approaches, attention will focus on fostering effective global cooperation and updating international structures to reflect current political and economic realities. The General Debate and subsequent events will serve as key platforms for these discussions.
