The Orlando College of Osteopathic Medicine (OCOM) recently opened its doors in Orlando, Florida, driven by the vision of Indian American co-founders Dr. Kiran Patel and Dr. Pallavi Patel. Their aim is to address the shortage of physicians and residency programs in Central Florida.
OCOM’s curriculum entails two years of on-campus didactic training, followed by two years of clinical rotations at affiliated hospital systems across Florida. The college has forged partnerships with over 26 hospitals and healthcare systems, including the Kiran Patel Institute for Graduate Medical Education, facilitating residency positions statewide. The inaugural class of 97 students is set to commence on August 5, 2024.
Dr. Kiran Patel, born in Zambia to Asian-American parents, pursued medicine in Gujarat before completing his residency in Internal Medicine in New Jersey. After a cardiology fellowship at Columbia University, he established a successful practice in Tampa, Florida. Dr. Kiran ventured into physician practice management and managed care contracts, eventually founding the largest Medicaid provider in Florida.
Dr. Pallavi Patel, a board-certified pediatrician and philanthropist, began her medical journey in India before relocating to Zambia. In addition to her pediatric practice, she advocates for issues like teen pregnancy, women’s health, and education. Recognized for her contributions, Dr. Pallavi was inducted into the Florida Women’s Hall of Fame in 2008.
The Patels have extended their philanthropic efforts across Zambia, India, and Florida. Their contributions include the establishment of the Dr. Pallavi Patel Performing Arts Conservatory in Tampa, enabling countless young individuals to pursue their aspirations in music and the performing arts.
