In anticipation of the upcoming second season of Major League Cricket (MLC) in the United States, the Washington Freedom team has appointed renowned cricketer Ricky Ponting as its new head coach. Sanjay Govil, the Indian American entrepreneur who owns the team, expressed confidence that Ponting’s appointment would contribute to the positive growth of Major League Cricket and align with the league’s objectives.
Govil reflected on the success of MLC’s inaugural season and emphasized the league’s commitment to advancing cricket in the USA, highlighting plans to build upon last year’s groundwork. Ponting shared his enthusiasm for joining the Washington Freedom in 2024, noting the rising popularity of cricket in the US and his eagerness to contribute to Major League Cricket.
While acknowledging the departure of his colleague Greg Shipperd, Ponting expressed readiness to assume the role of head coach and build upon Shipperd’s achievements in setting up a successful franchise. Shipperd recently resigned from his role at Freedom to concentrate on Cricket NSW’s Blues and the Sydney Sixers in Australia’s domestic tournaments.
As a former Australian cricket player, Ponting enjoys global recognition as one of the sport’s premier figures. With extensive experience in short-form cricket, including roles with Mumbai Indians and the Australian Men’s squad, he currently serves as coach for the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
MLC’s inaugural season in 2023 revolutionized cricket in America by introducing world-class domestic T20 action, drawing sold-out crowds primarily in Texas and North Carolina. The Washington Freedom, based in the US capital, was among the six teams that participated in MLC’s historic debut season. All six teams are slated to return for the second season of MLC, scheduled to commence on July 4th.
