This autumn, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi received the Paul Simon Public Service Award from the Illinois Hunger Coalition (IHC) in recognition of his contributions to anti-hunger initiatives.
During his acceptance speech, Krishnamoorthi lauded the IHC’s efforts in safeguarding critical American programs such as SNAP benefits. He underlined the personal significance of these programs, as his family had relied on them when they first arrived in the United States.
Krishnamoorthi shared his family’s experience during the 1973 recession when his father lost his job, and they depended on food stamps and public housing. He emphasized his commitment to ensuring the availability of programs like SNAP for those in need.
The Congressman expressed gratitude to the Illinois Hunger Coalition and those who supported its mission. He acknowledged their role in allowing him to be part of their endeavors and for bestowing upon him the honor.
The Illinois Hunger Coalition (IHC) is dedicated to eliminating hunger and addressing racial, economic, and social disparities. They empower communities statewide to combat hunger by expanding federal nutrition and health programs.
In partnership with various government levels, the IHC tailors programs to meet community-specific needs, ensuring that affordable, culturally appropriate food, healthcare, and essential resources are accessible to all with dignity and respect.
