The Khalistan movement has been witnessing a resurgence in various parts of the world, especially in countries like the US, UK, and Australia, which have significant Indian diaspora communities. Recent attacks on the Indian consulate in San Francisco have raised serious concerns. In a conversation with US Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, Executive Editor Rohan Dua discussed the potential threat posed by Khalistanis in the US.
Congressman Krishnamoorthi, known for strongly condemning the consulate attack, was asked by Dua about the increasing frequency of such incidents. Dua pointed out that these attacks were not isolated, as they had also occurred in the UK, where the Prime Minister has Indian origins. The tension’s ripples even reached the shores of the US West Coast, further fueling concerns about the impact of the Khalistan movement in the country. Krishnamoorthi firmly asserted that the Khalistanis represent only a small faction.
In the interview, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi made it clear that Sikh Americans, as a whole, do not share the sentiments of the fringe Khalistani group. He firmly believes that the vast majority of Sikh Americans, along with other Indian Americans, would never support or endorse violence and aggression promoted by this small faction.
When discussing concerns about potential financial support and tension caused by Khalistanis between nations, the Congressman stressed the importance of peaceful resolutions to disputes. He strongly condemned any form of aggression and violence, citing a disturbing flyer promoting a rally with the phrase “Kill India.”
Throughout the conversation, Congressman Krishnamoorthi remained steadfast in his position, asserting that Khalistanis do not pose a significant threat in the US. Instead, he emphasized the need for fostering peaceful dialogue and understanding among communities to address grievances and promote harmonious coexistence.
Excerpts from the Interview:
ROHAN DUA: You strongly denounced the attack on the Indian consulate in San Francisco. However, it seems these attacks are not isolated incidents, as they have occurred in the UK, even with the UK government having a Prime Minister of Indian descent and origin. They also reached the West Coast in the US. Do you believe Khalistanis are a considerable threat here?
CONGRESSMAN RAJA KRISHNAMURTHI: I believe they represent an extremely small minority of people. The vast majority of Sikh Americans and Indian Americans, in general, would never endorse the violence and aggression promoted by this small group. Recently, I came across a concerning flyer for a rally that advocated harm to India, even using the phrase “Kill India.” I strongly condemn such aggressive behavior. It is crucial to seek peaceful resolutions to disagreements and never resort to force.
