Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Canada on December 11 and 12, 2026, as India and Canada seek to strengthen bilateral relations and advance cooperation in trade, energy, technology and security. The announcement was made by the High Commission of India in Ottawa through a post on social media platform X.
The visit comes amid efforts by New Delhi and Ottawa to build on recent diplomatic engagement and expand cooperation across several sectors. Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney have agreed to work towards concrete outcomes in trade, energy, technology, security and people-to-people ties.
According to reports, Modi’s visit will include engagements in Toronto, in addition to official bilateral meetings in Ottawa. Carney indicated that the Indian prime minister’s programme would be largely based in Toronto while speaking to members of the Indian diaspora in Calgary. Sources have also indicated that Modi is expected to address a diaspora gathering in Toronto, similar to the event held during his previous bilateral visit to Canada in 2015.
Trade is expected to be an important part of the discussions as both countries explore opportunities to strengthen economic ties. In September, Canadian High Commissioner to India Christopher Cooter told The Hindu that negotiations on an India-Canada trade agreement were expected to make progress by the end of the year. He also indicated that increased engagement between the two countries was expected to culminate in Modi’s December visit.
The proposed agreement could help expand bilateral commerce and create opportunities for businesses in both countries. Cooperation in energy, technology and security is also expected to feature in discussions as the two governments seek to broaden their partnership amid global economic and geopolitical uncertainty.
Following his Canada visit, Modi is expected to travel to the United States from December 13 to 15 to attend the G20 summit. He is then scheduled to visit Brussels from December 16 to 17 for meetings with European leaders.
During the Brussels visit, Modi is expected to engage in bilateral discussions and participate in developments related to the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement. The visit is expected to add momentum to India’s efforts to expand trade and economic cooperation with European partners.
Meanwhile, negotiations on the India-US trade agreement are also progressing. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has said that the first tranche of the proposed deal is nearing the final legal drafting stage.
Modi’s planned visits to Canada, the United States and Belgium will bring together several of India’s key diplomatic and economic priorities. These include strengthening bilateral partnerships, expanding market access and deepening cooperation with major global economies.
The Canada visit is particularly significant as India and Canada work towards translating recent diplomatic engagement into concrete progress on trade and other areas of mutual interest. The outcome of the meetings could help shape the next phase of bilateral relations.
