India and the United States discussed ways to expand their defense and strategic partnership during a high-level meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday, as Admiral Samuel Paparo, Commander of the U.S. Pacific Command, continued his official visit to India.
Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh met Paparo to review opportunities for deeper military cooperation and exchange perspectives on developments affecting both countries. According to India’s Ministry of Defence, the discussions covered bilateral defense relations as well as regional and global security concerns.
Paparo’s visit has brought together several senior Indian defense officials, underscoring the growing focus on coordination between the two countries. On Monday, he met senior members of India’s military leadership during an engagement that US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor described as a reflection of the importance attached to the U.S.-India Major Defense Partnership.
Gor highlighted Paparo’s position as commander of the U.S. Pacific Command, which is responsible for US military operations across a vast Indo-Pacific area. He said the admiral’s meetings with Indian military leaders reflected the expanding scope and significance of defense cooperation between Washington and New Delhi.
Paparo also held discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, with maritime security and broader cooperation in the Indo-Pacific featuring prominently in their conversation. Jaishankar said the two sides discussed strengthening their security partnership and improving coordination on maritime issues in the region.
The admiral arrived in New Delhi on October 3 for a six-day official visit focused on reinforcing defense ties between India and the United States. His meetings with Indian officials come as both countries continue to expand cooperation across several areas of security and military technology.
Discussions during the visit have also addressed emerging technologies and digital transformation, reflecting the increasing role of technological capabilities in modern defense planning. Officials have explored ways to maintain strategic stability in the region while improving resilience in defense-related energy systems.
The talks also come against the backdrop of intense global competition in advanced technology. For India and the United States, closer coordination in areas such as innovation, defense technology and maritime security remains an important component of their broader strategic relationship.
Paparo’s engagements with Indian political and military leaders demonstrate the wide range of issues being addressed by the two countries, from immediate regional security concerns to longer-term cooperation involving technology, energy resilience and strategic stability across the Indo-Pacific.
