India and Japan have discussed opportunities to further strengthen cooperation in communications, digital technology and artificial intelligence, reflecting the growing importance of emerging technologies in their bilateral relationship.
The discussions took place during a meeting between India’s Ambassador to Japan, Nagma Mallick, and Hideo Fuseida, Director General for International Affairs at Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, in Tokyo. The two officials exchanged views on expanding collaboration across communications, digital technologies and AI.
The latest engagement comes amid broader efforts by India and Japan to deepen cooperation in advanced technologies. The two countries have identified artificial intelligence, information and communication technology, semiconductors and other emerging areas as important components of their economic and technological partnership.
India and Japan have also been working to strengthen cooperation in AI through strategic dialogues and research partnerships. A joint statement issued in July 2026 highlighted areas including AI governance, cybersecurity, digital infrastructure, computing resources, semiconductors and collaboration among government, industry and academia.
The communications sector has remained another important area of bilateral cooperation. Earlier initiatives have included collaboration on 5G, Open RAN, telecom network security, quantum communications and other emerging technologies. Both countries have also explored opportunities for joint projects and technological development under their broader ICT cooperation framework.
The latest discussion therefore adds to a wider India-Japan technology partnership that extends beyond traditional economic cooperation. Continued engagement in communications, digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence could create opportunities for research, innovation and industry collaboration between the two countries.
