Indian space technology startup GalaxEye has achieved a major international milestone after securing a United States patent for the core technology behind its OptoSAR imaging system. The development strengthens the company’s intellectual property portfolio and highlights the growing presence of Indian private companies in advanced space and satellite technologies.
The patented system is designed to bring together optical imaging and microwave-based Synthetic Aperture Radar, commonly known as SAR, in a synchronized manner. According to GalaxEye, the technology allows both types of sensors to operate in alignment while collecting information at the same time.
This synchronized approach addresses a major technical challenge associated with combining data from optical and radar-based systems. Images captured through different sensors can often vary in terms of location and timing, making it more difficult to accurately combine the information. GalaxEye’s technology aims to ensure that observations from both systems are spatially and temporally matched, allowing the collected data to work together more effectively.
The company has already received patent protection for the foundational technology in India. Securing additional protection in the United States represents an important expansion of its international intellectual property presence and could help safeguard technology developed by the company as it pursues opportunities in global markets.
GalaxEye said the technology was conceptualized and engineered in India before being taken into space through Mission Drishti. The achievement reflects the increasing technical capabilities of India’s growing private space industry, where startups are developing sophisticated systems for satellite operations, Earth observation, and data collection.
The combination of optical and radar technologies could also offer advantages over conventional satellite imaging. Optical systems can produce detailed visual information but may face limitations caused by clouds, poor weather, or insufficient light. SAR technology, on the other hand, can operate under a broader range of weather and lighting conditions.
By bringing the two technologies together, GalaxEye aims to create a more comprehensive Earth-observation capability. Such systems could potentially provide more reliable and detailed information for applications that depend on frequent and accurate observations of the Earth’s surface.
The latest patent arrives as India’s private space ecosystem continues to expand, with startups increasingly participating in the development of advanced technologies once largely associated with government agencies and major international corporations.
For GalaxEye, the US patent represents more than legal protection for a technological innovation.
