Fremont Mayor Raj Salwan has taken on a new national leadership position that could give the California city fresh opportunities in parks, tourism, recreation and community development. Salwan has been selected as Vice Chair for Parks for the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ Tourism, Arts, Parks, Entertainment & Sports Committee.
The appointment gives Salwan an opportunity to connect with mayors and city leaders from across the country and examine how other communities are developing their public spaces and attracting visitors. He said he intends to use the position to exchange ideas, identify potential partnerships and explore funding opportunities that could benefit Fremont.
For Salwan, the role is also about bringing successful approaches from other cities back home. He wants Fremont to learn from innovative projects taking place elsewhere while finding ways to adapt those ideas to the city’s own needs and character.
A major goal is to raise Fremont’s profile as a destination. Salwan hopes to showcase locations and experiences that are already popular with local residents while encouraging more people from outside the city to visit. Increased tourism could also create additional opportunities for restaurants, retailers, small businesses and other local enterprises.
Salwan’s new national role adds to a public-service career that has been closely connected to Fremont. He became the city’s first Indian American mayor after taking the oath of office in December 2024. Having grown up in Fremont, he has spent more than 18 years involved in local government and community service.
Before becoming mayor, Salwan served in several civic positions, including as a Human Relations Commissioner and Planning Commissioner. He later joined the Fremont City Council and served as Vice Mayor before reaching the city’s top elected office.
Outside government, Salwan is a small business owner and a father of three. His academic background is also rooted in science and medicine. He studied biological sciences at the University of California, Irvine, before completing a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at Tuskegee University.
With his new position, Salwan will have a broader platform to exchange ideas with leaders nationwide while continuing to focus on Fremont’s growth. His priorities include strengthening public spaces, creating new opportunities for the community, attracting visitors and supporting the local economy.
